Commercial pilot Training

Student Pilot License

You must appear for a written theory examination in Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology and Air Navigation and Air Technical.

Private Pilot Licence

After getting your SPL you can take flying lessons from an insructor. To obtain a Private Pilot License, you have to fly a minimum of 60 hours. Of this, at least 20 hours should be solo flying and 5 hours should be cross-country flights. Also you need to clear theory examinations in subjects like Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Aircraft Engines and Seamanship. The total cost of obtaining a PPL could be Rs 2 lakh (Rs 200,000)

Procedure for obtaining Commercial Pilot License in India

You need a minimum of 250 hours of flying to get this license. Of this, 150 hours have to be solo flying, 25 hours of cross-country flying, 10 hours of instrument flying (which means you rely only on the plane's instruments for flying without looking at the horizon or external assistance), and 5 hours of flying in the night.

A medical certificate from ACFME or IAM and theory tests in Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Technical and Planning are other important parts of the process.

The age bracket for getting a CPL is between 18 years and 30 years.

You can get the Private Helicopter License if you complete 40 hours of flight training with 15 hours of solo flying. Written exams on basic aviation subjects have to be taken.

To get a Commercial Helicopter Pilot License, you need 60 hours of flight training as well as appear for a written exam.

Airline Transport Pilot's License

The above mentioned licenses can only allow you to fly as a co-pilot. If you want to take over as captain, you need the Airline Transport Pilot's License, which is the highest aviation license available.

Along with clearing written papers, you also need to clock a total of 1,500 flying hours and take medical tests.

Additional training and information

Once you get the CPL, you may want to go in for multi engine training.

After seven to 10 hours of multi engine training on a certain aircraft, your license will carry an endorsement of the aircraft you have flown.

All the above licenses need to be renewed regularly. You must adhere strictly to medical tests.

Fly one hour after your license expires, and you will be banned from flying ever again!

These days, you could even try for a scholarship. Please visit www.scholarshipsindia.com for details.

Damages: Multi engine flight training is very expensive and can cost anything between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 per hour.

Private Pilot Licence in India

In order to get Private Pilot License, you at lest need 40 hrs of flight time per DGCA requirement. Most likely it will take additional 10 to 15 extra hours. Out of this, 20 hours need to be solo time. There will also be some theory papers which you need to clear for PPL.

Duration of the PPL training depends on several factors such as
1) your ability to proficiently perform required maneuvers
2) weather
3) availability of aircraft
4) availability of instructor.

You need to hold class III medical certificate. If you take these in to consideration then it can take anywhere from few months to 1 yr. In regards to cost, it ranges between 2.75 to 3.50 lakhs if fuel price does not increase.

If you interested in obtaining Commercial Pilot License (CPL) then it requires 200 flying hours. It takes 2 to 3 yrs to compete 200 hour and cost will be around 16 to 18 lakhs. It requires class II medical; but, if you intent to work for airline then you have to hold class I medical certificate.

Cost: If you enrolled in flight school in India; then, it will cost you anywhere from 18 to 20 lakhs. In USA, it will be around 20 to 22 lakhs including housing and food and transportation.

Duration: In Indian, it will take 2 to 3 years depending on availability of instructor, airplane and weather condition. In USA it will take 6 to 10 months except instructor and plane availability is not a problem with the schools in USA.

Flight Training: You need to obtain private pilot license first. It requires 60 hours of flying then need to obtain instrument rating then commercial pilot license. Total of 200 hrs of flight time for CPL. Flight schools in India does not need to provide CPL training in complex aircraft. Benefit of obtaining CPL training in USA would be that you would receive 10 hours of your CPL training in a complex aircraft (aircraft with retractable landing gear and variable pitch prop). You need to pass air regulation, air navigation, aviation meteorology and technical written test conducted by the DGCA for PPL and CPL. CPL issue by FAA in America is convertable in to DGCA CPL; but, you need to pass written test in four subjests stated above.

Job Prospect: Currently, there is significant shortage of qualified pilots in India, China, East Asia and Middle East, Europe and USA. Starting salary of a pilot is 1.5 to 2.0 lakhs per month in India.
